Should I put Lavender essential oil directly on my skin? How much Peace & Calming essential oil blend should I put on my toddler?
Navigating the use of pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils can carry a lot of questions with it, especially if you want to make sure you're using essential oils safely. We have a handy chart for you! But there's a little more to it than just following a chart...
Pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted. Some oils are considered gentle and generally safe to apply directly to the skin, like Lavender and Copaiba. Other oils are considered “hot” and should be diluted before they are applied to skin, like Cinnamon Bark and Oregano. Refer to this helpful chart and it's always best-practice to follow individual oil labels for dilution instructions.
Where to Apply
You can apply essential oils to most parts of your body, but you want to be cautious of your most sensitive skin. To get the most benefit from your essential oils, you’ll find that certain applications are more effective than others.
Use your head, literally! Essential oils can be applied to the crown of your head, behind the ears, to your neck, and to your temples.
If the aroma of one drop of oil is too strong, or your skin is sensitive, you can dilute it with a carrier oil. Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex lets you adjust the strength of the essential oil according to your preference.
Essential oils are great for massage! For a calming massage, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils can be added to a carrier oil. For rejuvenating muscles after a long workout, experience the cooling effect of Peppermint essential oil’s menthol in a sports massage.
In aromatherapy, many people choose to apply essential oils to the tops and soles of the feet. One common application is using Tea Tree essential oil as part of spa and beauty treatments - especially to help fight odor on particularly funky feet before a pedicure. Just a few drops in a bath of lukewarm water ought to do the trick.
Using Essential Oils on Children + Babies
To make it easy for you, Young Living created essential oil blends and essential oil-infused products specifically for kids and babies. Before using Young Living products with your little ones, carefully review the individual product label for full information on appropriate age usage and any cautions. Each child is different, so it’s always a good idea to test a small amount to make sure no irritation occurs before applying to a large area of skin.
The same goes when diffusing essential oils around babies. Be sure to test them first! You should also be generous when it comes to dilution and remember to use less than you would for an adult. Some of our favorite essential oils for babies are Grapefruit, Lavender, and German Chamomile.
Remember: A Little Goes a Long Way
Essential oils are very potent, so you have to be cautious when you use them.
Less is more! You can always add another drop, so start slow, whether you’re using your oils topically, aromatically, or internally.
Due to potency, some oils may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or other carrier oil to the affected area to dilute.
Always read label directions for each individual oil before use.
Do not put essential oils in eyes, ears, nose, or other areas with sensitive skin.
