WaBa Blast! - The Perfect Non-Alcoholic Shot Recipe for Your Summer Party

We're drinking every last drop of summer up, and that includes enjoying our last recipe in our Summer Shots Series - a delightful watermelon basil combo - the WaBa Blast. Check out the recipe below, as well as a little info about the health benefits of watermelon - PLUS how to pick the best one!


Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup seeded watermelon, chilled

  • 1/4 cup ice

  • 1 toothpick dip Basil Vitality essential oil

Basil Vitality essential oil fights mental fatigue and supports the body's natural response to inflammation, throat and lung health, is powerful for your immune system, your muscles, and more.


Directions

Blend watermelon and ice until smooth. Swirl toothpick in Basil Vitality essential oil, then swirl it in the watermelon puree (you can also let it sit in it for 3 minutes) before blending again for 10 seconds to combine puree with the oil. If you'd like, strain through fine-mesh strainer to remove pulp. Makes 2-4 shots.

You can go up to adding one full drop of the Basil Vitality essential oil, but we recommend trying a second toothpick swirl first because the strength of the flavor of this oil can quickly overpower the watermelon if you're not careful.


Health Benefits of Watermelon

  • Contains vitamins and minerals C, A, B1, B5, and B6, potassium, and magnesium.

  • High in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene.

  • Has citrulline, an important amino acid.

  • Cucurbitacin E, a plant compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • May improve heart health, lower inflammation and oxidative stress, and help prevent Macular Degeneration.

  • Helps relieve muscle soreness, is good for healthy skin and hair, and even aids digestion.


How to Pick the Best Watermelon

The BEST place to get a watermelon is your local farmer's market because they'll only sell you what is ripe and ready. Plus, you can't really go wrong supporting local farmers and businesses.

At a grocery store, pick it up and make sure it feels heavy for its size. Next, ignore the ones that look perfectly green all over. Look for the yellow splotch where it's been resting on the ground; when it's kind of a creamy yellow, it's ripe! Lastly, give it a nice pat on the back and listen for a deep, hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull. Male watermelons are the more oval-shaped ones and they're known to be extra juicy. Females are rounder and known for their sweeter taste.
