A Homemade Egg Nog Recipe for a Healthy Holiday Season

Updated: Jan 16

Christmas is totally our favorite holiday here. The decorations, the music, all the holiday foods + specialty drinks - we just can't get enough. And while, sure, you can buy egg nog at the store, it tastes soooo much better when it's homemade aaaand, per usual, we're adding an extra wellness boost with essential oils!

This recipe does take a bit longer than many of our others because you gently cook certain ingredients and then chill well before serving it. We highly recommend doing most or all of the prep for this holiday recipe the day before you wish to serve it. Plus, it gives all the ingredients a chance to really mix together for the best flavor.

Dried vs. Essential Oils

Why use essential oils instead of dried or powdered ingredients? Check out the health benefits of the oil in this recipe:

  • Nutmeg Vitality Essential Oil: balanced appetite, healthy digestion, freshens breath, and excellent for cerebral and circulatory support.

Ingredients

Serves: 12 to 16

  • 6 large eggs + 2 yolks (set aside those 2 whites for breakfast tomorrow)

  • 1/2 cup, plus 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 4 cups whole milk

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 4 drops Nutmeg Vitality

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks

  • Grated nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

On the counter, combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a heavy pan (at least 4 quarts). Whisk until well-combined and continue whisking while you slowly pour the milk in (aim for a steady stream until completely incorporated). Turn on your burner to lowest possible heat setting, place pan on it, and stir continuously until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon and check the temp reaches 160 degrees F. We highly recommend using an instant-read thermometer so you can see right when it reaches the desired temp. This is where patience comes in, as this cooking process should take about 45 to 60 minutes before it reaches the proper temp. To avoid any accidentally cooked egg from getting into your glass, strain mixture through a fine sieve into a large bowl. Stir in vanilla extract. Pour this custard mixture into a glass pitcher, decanter, or container and cover with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (you can also do it up to 3 days before).

When you're ready to serve it, add in your Nutmeg Vitality and stir well. Pour the heavy cream into a bowl and whip until it forms soft peaks. Fold whipped cream into the cold custard mixture until combined. Serve eggnog in chilled cups or glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg. You can also top it with a layer of whipped cream before your sprinkle of nutmeg.

Ingesting Essential Oils

When it comes to ingesting essential oils, it's super important to know where your oils come from, how they're made, and exactly what is in the bottle you purchase. Do your research and do not EVER ingest oils unless you can get all your questions answered to your satisfaction by the company you choose. Check out our other posts for info on ingesting essential oils safely and some ideas of what to ask a company before you buy from them.

After a lot of personal research (which hasn't stopped, by the way) the only brand I feel comfortable using for dietary and supplement use is Young Living, and they even have a full line of essential oils labeled specifically for ingesting.
