Summer is a great time to explore nature, including ditching synthetics in your personal care products for products that harness the power of natural ingredients. Simplify your routine - and how much you have to pack for your next road trip - with hacks that use the same item multiple ways. I'm sharing seven ways you can simplify your summer with one of the most versatile essential oils that you will come across - Cedarwood. It's a must-have to unlock the magic of summer!
1. Outdoor Skin Spray
Cedarwood essential oil's natural scent is unpleasant to insects, making it an effective and toxin-free alternative to other body sprays. Simply apply a few drops to your skin, or add it to your favorite carrier oil like coconut oil and apply it before heading outdoors.
"I make a DIY spray that truly works. We can definitely tell when we forget. Before, I would debate whether to deal with the bugs or put on a nasty spray that smelled horrible and gave me headaches. Now I don't have to debate - I can stay pest free while outdoors, smell nice, and not have a headache while doing it!" - Marci P.
Create an outdoor spray by combining it with Citronella, Rosemary, or Lemongrass and water or alcohol-free witch hazel in a glass amber spray bottle with a mist top. Gently shake before each use.
2. Relaxation
Summer is all about taking a break, and Cedarwood essential oil can help enhance your mood and calm your mind. Diffuse a few drops in your favorite diffuser before bedtime, and let the warm, woody aroma lull you into a restful slumber. Cedarwood is one of my son's go-to bedtime oils, helping him fall asleep quickly and stay asleep all night long (unheard of for kids with Angelman Syndrome).
3. Hair & Scalp Care
The sun and chlorine can damage your hair and scalp in the summer months. Cedarwood essential oil can help promote a healthy scalp and support healthy hair growth (if you'd like to see some incredible before-and-after photos I've been collecting from those in our community who have shared their personal experiences, message me).
Whip up our favorite Mermaid Spray, add 10 drops to your favorite synthetic-free shampoo, or create a relaxing scalp treatment. Simply mix a few drops of Cedarwood oil with a carrier oil like Jojoba and massage into your scalp. Let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it off. This will leave your hair feeling soft and moisturized.
4. Improve the Appearance of Skin
Cedarwood essential oil is known for its astringent properties, which can help reduce the appearance of pores and tone the skin. Add a drop or two of Cedarwood oil to your favorite synthetic-free moisturizer, or mix it with a carrier oil - like Rosehip or Evening Primrose oil - and apply it to your skin before going out in the sun.
5. Meditation
Get in touch with your inner self and take a much-needed breather. Cedarwood essential oil can help you get into a deep meditative state by promoting feelings of tranquility and calmness. Diffuse Cedarwood essential oil during your meditation practice, or apply a drop to your wrists or over your heart and inhale deeply.
6. Natural Deodorant
Applying traditional deodorants gives toxins a sort of fast-track to our body systems through the lymph nodes in our armpits. Use a drop or two in each armpit and enjoy its natural odor-fighting properties in place of your natural deodorant -or- before applying your deodorant on those extra busy and active days.
7. Mental Focus
One of the reasons Cedarwood is so helpful for sleep is that it promotes vitality and mental focus (in the sleep situation, it helps you focus on the task at hand...which is bedtime). Before you head out on your next outdoor adventure or when you're juggling all the family activities, here's how to help keep your mental power in peak performance: Apply a drop to your hands, rub through your hair (it's your personal diffuser), and then cup your hands over your nose and take three full and deep breaths.
Essential oils really are so versatile, and Cedarwood can be used in so many different ways to simplify your summer, plus, it's super budget-friendly! How are you going to use Cedarwood first?
